PJ Lynch has been busy creating illustrations for a new collection of short stories for children.

'Once Upon A Place' is a new book for children with a host of Ireland's best writers and their stories brought to life through the artwork of PJ Lynch.

He takes the words of writers and conjures up some of the most striking images in Irish children's literature.

The collection includes 11 short stories and six poems by writers including Roddy Doyle, Eoin Colfer, Derek Landy, Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick, Jim Sheridan, Siobhán Parkinson, John Connolly, Jane Mitchell, Oisín McGann, and Sarah Webb, amongst others.

PJ Lynch describes the work involved in getting the characterisation right. He likes to choose unusual angles to make the black and white charcoal illustrations more interesting. His illustration for Jim Sheridan's story depicts a devil type character on the back of the hero of the story.

PJ Lynch has also written and illustrated his own new book, 'The Boy Who Fell Off The Mayflower'. The book tells the story of the Mayflower, the ship that brought English pilgrims to America in the 1600s. The book took three years to write and illustrate. PJ Lynch advises any young person interested in becoming an illustrator to draw, draw and draw.
