Fishermen protesting against cheap imports hand out fish for free to highlight a difficult market.

Free fish were handed out by fishermen at the gates of Dáil Éireann over low prices for domestic fish and cheap imports. The protest was organised by the Irish Fishermen's Organisation.

Housewives, passersby and even men in pinstriped suits were seen scrambling for the free fish at the Dáil.

Seven tonnes of fish, including prawns and black sole, were given away mainly outside Leinster House in Merrion Square, close to the office of the Minister for Fisheries. The protest continued at the offices of Bord Iascaigh Mhara in Ballsbridge, calling for government action over the crisis.

Frank Doyle of the Irish Fishermen's Organisation says the action was taken to highlight the problems with the price of fish. He is calling for government support to protect Irish fishermen.

It's very difficult for vessels to earn a decent living from the present price situation.

The protest received support from housewives. One woman said that while she did not want to have to pay more for fish, it should be properly priced in favour of the fishermen. Another woman has no idea why the fishermen are protesting but is delighted to get free fish.
