A chance to have a go at a wide range of activities on Ireland's first National Water Day.

Sailing events planned for National Water Day had to be cancelled due to high winds. The weather did not stop people from enjoying themselves at demonstrations of water polo at Marian College pool in Dublin. Right across the country, swimming lessons were available.

Organised by Cospoir, the National Sports Council, there were opportunities to participate in a wide variety of water based activities, from canoeing to sub aqua sports.

In Clare, students had pushed an amphibious bicycle from Dublin to Shannon, which Biddy Early cycled across the Shannon as part of a fundraising event for a new church.

Limerick celebrated National Water Day yesterday, so as not to clash with the Munster Hurling Final. Lord Mayor of Limerick Clem Casey proved that he was up for a challenge.

All in all, a rather successful day on the water.
