A collection of music, poetry and film by the composer Seán Ó Riada is deposited at the Boole Library at University College Cork.
Seán Ó Riada from Cork was one of Ireland's foremost music composers of the modern era.
The Seán Ó Riada collection donated to University College Cork (UCC) also contains many musical instruments, including what his family describes as the last Kerry harp, dating from the sixteenth century.
Seán Ó Riada died at the age of just 40 leaving behind a body of work of national and international significance.
University College Cork librarian John Fitzgerald describes the importance of the collection to scholars, researchers, musicologists, musicians and the people of Cúil Aodha.
Members of the composer's family attended the handover of the Seán Ó Riada collection. The documents and papers include love letters between Seán and his wife Ruth, as well as a large family photographic archive. Seán's son Peadar is relieved that his father's archive will remain in Cork.
The collection will be housed at the Boole Library in University College Cork.
Among those in attendance at the ceremony were Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Tánaiste Mary Harney.
