Learning about Ireland's bat population and the need to preserve these flying mammals.

Donna Mullen and Brian Keely from the Dublin Bat Group have ambitious plans to conduct a survey of bats in Dublin in collaboration with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, as at present, the exact number of bats in Ireland is not known.

Bats do not pose a danger to humans, and any fears about them should be cast aside, as these tiny flying mammals only eat flying insects and do not damage houses.

Increased urbanisation and destruction of habitats are putting pressure on bats, and their numbers are in decline in Ireland.

It is possible to give them a helping hand by putting up bat boxes in gardens where they can roost. A south to southwest-facing spot about two and a half metres high is ideal,

A nice warm protected position.
