The United Kingdom set to leave the European Union ending a relationship that lasted for almost five decades.

Although a small group of Brexiteers make their presence felt outside Westminster, official events and the atmosphere around them is more restrained.

A cabinet meeting has taken place in Sunderland, the first place to declare for leaving the EU in the 2016 referendum.

In Scotland, a candlelit vigil will be held this evening for what First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon describes as,

A moment of real and profound sadness.

Brexit campaigners will view the departure as a victory. Leader of the Brexit Party Nigel Farage says the next step is to shape the United Kingdom's role with Europe and the rest of the world. He declares that,

The war is over.

Not much will change for the next eleven months, as the United Kingdom will be in a transition period until the end of the year.
