The church at Ballyhaunis in Mayo has a new spire after a ninety year wait.

The people of Ballyhaunis in County Mayo are celebrating the belated arrival of a spire for their parish church. Work began to complete the belfry of the parish church ninety years ago but then a shortage of funds meant the spire was never erected. The new spire has been named the Millennium Spire.

An elegant new spire talked about ninety years ago.

People in Ballyhaunis look on as the new spire is hoisted into position on the belfry of St Patrick's parish church. The parish priest Canon Joseph Cooney described the addition of the spire as a proud moment for Ballyhaunis and a tribute to the people who built the church.

Paula Walsh of the Ballyhaunis Millennium Spire Project Committee pays tribute to the many people from all over the world who donated generously towards the new spire which cost £250,000.
