The Cork Film Festival continues to offer the best from contemporary world cinema.

Twenty thousand people are expected at the Cork Film Festival where they will have 160 films to choose from over the week. This year the festival includes a special black and white category and the prestigious European Short Film Prize will be awarded.

Cork Film Festival spokesperson Ruth Riddick says the event has played a part in the recent resurgence in interest of cinema in Ireland.

We showcase the best of world cinema.

The festival attracts filmmakers and enthusiasts from at home and abroad. Increased support for the Cork festival could be seen as a reflection of the growing Irish film industry. In 1990, just three feature films were made in Ireland. In 1993, that figure had risen to 12. So far in 1994, 18 feature films have been completed.

There are considerable economic benefits to Cork from the festival with hotels booked up throughout the city.
