A new centre will provide information for tourists who visit Scattery Island in the Shannon Estuary.

Scattery Island (Inis Cathaigh) in the Shannon Estuary is off the coast of Kilrush in County Clare. The new centre was officially opened by Minister of State Tom Parlon.

The Scattery Island visitor centre is located next to an ancient monastic settlement founded by Saint Senan. Tom Parlon believes the visitor centre will offer a tremendous boost to Kilrush tourism. There is now a regular ferry service to Scattery island and the visitor centre offers facilities for tourists when they arrive.

Project supervisor Michael Donnellan refers to Scattery Island as,

The jewel in the crown of the Shannon Estuary.

Tom Parlon followed the monastic trail on the island and spoke to RTÉ News about the latest update on decentralisation to the Kilrush area. With jobs being moved to Kilrush by the Revenue Commissioners, in excess of 50 staff have applied to move.

It's hoped that the new visitor facilities on the island will highlight Scattery as an important national monument.
