Will Northern Bank accept liability for lodgments robbed from the Bray branch night safe?
Over 20 Bray traders lost an estimated £150,000 when the local Northern Bank branch night safe deposit box was robbed on 29 December. The theft happened the night before the bank reopened after the Christmas holiday. Those affected include owners of a cinema, hotels, pubs and an off licence chain.
They are now fighting to get their money back.
The concerned traders meet with senior Northern Bank officials in an effort to persuade them to accept even partial responsibility for their loss.
Little if any progress has being made.
The Northern Bank holds the position that it is not responsible for deposits until they are lodged into customers' accounts.
It is up to night safe users to insure themselves against any loss prior to lodgement.
The night safe is purely a service of convenience and does not guarantee security.
The traders will have to wait until 12 January for a decision by the Northern Bank on whether or not it will accept liability.
