Suggestion that the Grand Canal through Dublin is closed and converted for use as a sewer.
The Grand Canal stretches for 132 km connecting Dublin with the River Shannon. The canal owner, Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ), have made proposals that would transfer the 9 km section of the Grand Canal to Dublin Corporation for conversion to a sewer. This would close and fill in the section of the canal from Blackhorse Bridge in Inchicore, to the Grand Canal Basin.
Bord Fáilte and the Inland Waterways' Association are opposing the scheme. Cutting off the Grand Canal from the River Shannon and from the Irish Sea would be disastrous for tourism and for the economy of the country.
