Waterford pays tribute to Frederick Douglass who visited the city in October 1845.

Frederick Douglass a former slave became a world famous abolitionist for slavery. A plaque unveiled at Waterford City Hall reads,

Frederick Douglass
American Abolitionist
Social Reformer
And Statesman spoke in
City Hall
9th October 1845

Frederick Douglass became a close friend of Daniel O'Connell. Their friendship was referred to by US President Barack Obama during his visit to Ireland two years ago.
