St Francis Boxing Club in Limerick city could lose its home to redevelopment plans.

Established in 1928, St Francis Boxing Club in Limerick city has gained many boxing honours as well as playing an important social role in the community. Since 1934 the club has been based at Arthur’s Mews in Limerick city centre.

Nobody put much value on derelict inner city property in those days, but times have changed.

The club is one of the last remaining buildings obstructing the redevelopment plans of the new landlords, a group of Limerick businessmen.

St Francis Boxing Club president Eamonn Ryan fears if the club loses its home, Limerick city will lose out. He is proud of the club’s achievements and of the hundreds of young boxers who have attended the club,

Who never made the limelight, who have gained enormously and have been a credit to this city.

Eamonn Ryan is proud that the supervision and mentoring offered by the club keeps its members out of trouble in the locality.

The club’s potential move is being fought by local politicians Fianna Fail councillor Clem Casey and Alderman Jim Kemmy, leader of the Democratic Socialist Party. They are united in their determination to ensure the St Francis Boxing Club remains at Arthur’s Mews in the heart of Limerick city.
