Local groups help to remove rubbish from the Grand Canal at Inchicore in Dublin.
The people of Inchicore are leading the way in the clean up of the Grand Canal. The canal has been used as a dumping ground for unwanted household goods and rubbish. Volunteers helping with the work are determined to turn what is currently an eyesore into a place of beauty and an amenity for local people to enjoy.
Prams, bicycles, cookers, fridges and chairs were among the items pulled from the Grand Canal at the Fourth Lock as part of the clean up our waterways campaign undertaken by the Federation of Residents' and Tenants' Associations of Inchicore. The initiative has the backing of local businesses, Dublin Corporation, the Inland Waterways Association and six youth clubs in the area.
The plan is to develop the canal banks as gardens for the public to enjoy.
