Awards in recognition of the work done for the Irish community in Britain presented at a ceremony in London.

Actor TP McKenna, a former bank employee read the citations at the event. The individuals being honoured were welcomed to the stage with music from girl pipers from a London based band.

The Irish Ambassador to Britain, Paul Keating, presented the awards. Singer and harpist Mary O'Hara and actor Colin Blakely, were awarded for their contributions to the arts. Guests at the ceremony included singer Brendan O Dowda and flautist James Galway.

The bronze and marble awards were designed by sculptor Vincent Browne.

AIB general manager in Britain Gerry O'Mahony explains concerns the Irish in Britain have over stereotypical images often presented by comedians. Some comedy makes the Irish feel like second class citizens.
