The CII and the FIE vote to merge and form the Irish Business and Employers Confederation.
Members of the Confederation of Irish Industry (CII) and the Federation of Irish Employers (FIE) met separately to vote on the merger. The result was a clear vote in favour of the two organisations becoming one.
It was a significant majority decision.
President elect of IBEC Tom Jago said that the new organisation is determined to influence policy decisions in Dublin, Brussels and beyond to reap the optimum benefits for Irish industry, employers and the economy.
There was some opposition to the merger from the Small Firms Assocation (SFA). President of the SFA Peter Faulkner said that if IBEC does not perform, then the members will resign their membership.
Director General designate of IBEC John Dunne said that the most important message is that nobody should lose their nerve, and nothing should be done in the context of a recession or an election to set back the progress made to date.
Employers, government and the public alike now have to get used to the new body which will be called IBEC, for the first time a unified voice for the country's employers.
