A visit to the site of the former Newgate Prison in Dublin now a public park.
Newgate Prison was initially located at Cornmarket, near Christ Church Cathedral, on the south side Dublin. In 1781 the prison was moved to a new purpose built building on Green Street on the north side of the city. The prison finally closed in 1863 and the building was demolished in 1893.
The site is now home to Saint Michan's Park. Remnants of the prison remain with the railings that supported the original walls still in place. The door of the prison was incorporated into the basement area of a tenement house and is now housed in the Bailey pub on Duke Street in Dublin.
Also featured in the report is a wall plaque for Halla Colmcille at number 5 Blackhall Street, the headquarters of the 1st Battalion of the Dublin Brigade of the IRA (1914-1922).
