Thousands of people attend an anti-internment rally in Belfast organised by the Civil Rights Association.

Protesters marched from Shaw's Road through the Andersonstown estate in the pouring rain as a group played republican songs. The march continued to Casement Park GAA grounds where protesters gathered to listen to speakers including MPs Paddy Kennedy, Bernadette Devlin and Austin Currie.

The British army's attempt to stop the march failed when it took an unexpected route.

Each mention of the IRA won a roar of approval.

Before the speeches, a flag made by internees and smuggled out of Long Kesh was paraded across Casement Park.

Addressing the crowd Austin Currie said that the protesters would not back down by threats of a "Protestant backlash" and that there can be no solution while people are interned without trial.

We are prepared to face up to the consequences of that threat.
