President Mary McAleese lays a wreath at Ground Zero, New York in memory of the victims of the attacks on 11 September 2001.

President Mary McAleese's first engagement on a six day visit to New York was to visit Ground Zero and lay a wreath.

She laid a wreath to honour the memory of all those who died last September.

The president also wrote a note to remember the dead and placed it on the wall at the viewing platform.

God Bless those whose good hearts keep vigil here.
May the souls of the dead rest in peace.

At the monument to the police and firemen who died, President McAleese was presented with a tri-colour which possibly came from the rubble of a hotel and was recovered from the Ground Zero site by a police officer with Irish ancestry.

The president also met Ann McCabe, the widow of Garda Jerry McCabe, who was in the United States for a function.

Speaking on her visit to Ground Zero, President McAleese paid tribute to the extraordinary work being carried out on the site.

President Mary McAleese will be the guest of honour on the Fifth Avenue reviewing stand for the Saint Patrick's Day parade.
