Hopes that a new pier in the seaside town of Doolin in Clare will provide a boost to tourism.
The new £250,000 pier was officially opened by Minister for the Environment Liam Kavanagh. The Minister had a word of warning for those taking part in water based activities encouraging people to be mindful of the dangers of the Atlantic which can be treacherous at times.
I would strongly urge swimmers to use beach areas that are patrolled by lifeguards.
He also expects boat operators to have respect for the mood and the power of the Atlantic ocean.
Clare County Council hopes that the financial investment in the pier will give a much needed boost to the local economy. Following a tragedy last year, they have launched an intensive water safety campaign.
Councillor Blaise Tracey believes that the new pier will be of benefit to both locals and tourists alike. In 1983, ferries operating from Doolin took ten thousand people to and from the Aran Islands.
