An Bord Pleanála has granted planning permission to US technology giant Apple to build a data centre near Athenry, Co Galway.

The 24,500 square metre data centre will cater for the company's Apple Music, App Store, Messages, Maps and Siri customers in Europe.

The facility, to be built on a greenfield site at Derrydonnell, is expected to be operational in 2017 and will create 150 new jobs.

The development will involve a single-storey data centre, a logistic and administration building, and a security unit.

Planning permission was granted by Galway Co Council for the centre in September last year, however, a number of appeals were lodged.

An oral hearing on the major development took place in the city in May.

The board published its decision this morning with revised conditions.

A separate application for a 220kV electrical substation and a number of towers has also been approved.
