A new consumer survey reveals that people are spending more time on the internet while at the same time cutting their spending on fixed and mobile phone services.

The Commission of Communications Regulation's residential consumer ICT survey looks at attitudes to and usage of information and communications technologies and services by consumers here.

The survey shows that mobile penetration at 95% continues to increase, while fixed line penetration decreased marginally to 65%.

Home internet penetration has remained stable at 66%, while the average time spend on the web has risen from ten hours in December 2008 to 13.2 hours in January 2010.

The report also says that there has been an increase in perceived awareness of contracted internet download speeds. However, 40% of internet users are still not sure of their contracted speeds.

The ComReg survey says that the bi-monthly spend on fixed line services continues to fall. People now spend almost €80 on these services compared to over €96 in December 2008. Average monthly spend on mobile phones is also coming down, with consumers spending just over €36 at the start of this year compared to €41 in December 2008.
