Newspaper circulation figures for the second half of last year show falls for most daily and Sunday newspapers compared with the same period in 2008.

The Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) figures show that in the daily market, the Irish Independent still leads the way with an average of 149,906 a day, but this is down 3% on the same period a year earlier. The Irish Times fell by 7.4% to 106,926 and the Irish Examiner dropped 6.6% to 49,096.

In the Sunday newspaper market, the Sunday Independent's circulation was 268,140, down just 0.8%, while the Sunday Tribune lost 9.5% to 60,344. The Sunday World was 5.2% lower at 270,453, while the Sunday Business Post lost 4.9% to 52,271. But the Sunday Times did show an increase, rising 4% to 114,413, the only newspaper to show an increase.

The Evening Herald lost 7.4% compared with a year earlier to 69,351, while Cork's Evening Echo fell 6.8% to 22,844.

The ABC report also provided figures for a number of websites, which showed rte.ie with 2.93 million unique users a month, followed by independent.ie with 2.3 million and boards.ie with almost 1.8 million. Daft.ie, eircom.net and irishtimes.com all recorded more than a million unique users.
