The insurance cost of flooding damage to homes and businesses around the country may now exceed €250m across the entire insurance industry, according to Hibernian Aviva, the country's largest insurer.

The company's loss adjustors and claims assessors are beginning to file their claims reports as the floodwaters recede.

Hibernian Aviva said that the number of claims calls to its offices has started to peak, reaching over 4,500 at the end of last week.

The cost of the most recent significant flooding (in August 2008) to the insurance industry was estimated at €100m.
