130 jobs go at two firms, Teva to meet staff

130 workers have lost their jobs at a concrete plant in the midlands and a telecommunications contractor which works for Eircom.

The jobs are to go at Banagher Concrete Company in County Offaly and the Morrison Utilities sites in Portlaoise, Cork and Dublin. 60 more jobs are under threat at An Post in Portlaoise after the company lost a major contract with a UK catalogue retailer.

Meanwhile, staff at one of the biggest pharmaceutical factories in Waterford city are being called to a meeting with management tomorrow morning. It is expected that an announcement will be made then in relation to the current situation at the plant, which is owned by an Israeli consortium.

There are around 730 people employed at the Waterford facility, which is on the IDA Industrial Estate. Staff were told this morning that production would stop this evening at 10pm and resume at 2pm on Monday, a move which has not happened before.

Teva, formally known as IVAX, make inhalers and tablets. There has been no statement so far from the company and one is not expected before tomorrow's meeting.

Earlier, there was better jobs news, as a Belgian company which provides software for the financial services industry said it was setting up in Dublin, creating 20 jobs over the next four years.

BSB employs 220 people across Europe, and the Irish operation will be responsible for servicing the UK and Irish markets. IDA Ireland is helping the company to find a suitable location for its Dublin facility.

Frédéric Martin, international business development manager for BSB, said the company decided to locate in Dublin because of 'the maturity of the Irish financial services industry, the established talent pool and the cluster of financial services software companies operating here'.
