68 projects are to receive funds totalling €11.3m under Science Foundation Ireland's Research Frontiers Programme (RFP) for 2009. SFI distributes grants for research on behalf of the Government.
The funding is spread across 13 different areas including genetics; geo-sciences; astronomy; neuroscience; engineering and environmental science.
The 12 research bodies receiving funding under the 2009 RFP are UCD, Trinity College Dublin, NUI Galway, UCC, DCU, NUI Maynooth, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin Institute of Technology, Tyndall National Institute, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Teagasc and Waterford Institute of Technology.
Among the projects selected for funding are the development of a wind forecasting system, led by Professor Peter Lynch at UCD, and the administering of effective stroke rehabilitation therapy through a suitable brain computer interface, under the leadership of Dr Tomás Ward at NUI Maynooth.
