O2 Ireland added 26,000 new customers in the third quarter to bring its total number of customers to 1.713 million.

However, the mobile phone company reported service revenues of €234 million for the quarter, down 3.4% from €243 million on the same period last year.

The average monthly revenue per user for the quarter was €43.7, down from €47 in Q3 of 2007.

Text messaging continues to grow in popularity with a rise of 12.7% in the number of texts sent in the third quarter. 609 million texts were sent compared to 540 million last year. Test usage rose 55.1% and O2 puts the continued growth down to increased take-up of value-led price plans such as O2 Experience.

82,000 have now signed up to the firm's broadband service, which is driving growth in non-SMS data revenues.
