Dell report - WSJ says firm will sell computer plants

A spokesman for Dell in Ireland has declined to comment on a report in the Wall Street Journal which said the computer maker was trying to sell computer factories around the world.

Dell employs 3,000 at its manufacturing plant in Limerick and 1,350 at a sales and marketing operation in Dublin.

The WSJ quoted sources as saying that Dell had approached contract computer manufacturers in recent months with offers to sell the plants.

One person briefed on the plan told the Journal that he expected Dell to sell most, possibly all, of its factories 'within the next 18 months'. Other factories could be close, the person said.

The paper said the most likely buyers of Dell's factories would be big contract manufacturers, most of which are based in Asia.
