Science Foundation Ireland is to fund a €16.4m technology partnership between UCD and DCU. The project, called CLARITY, is being supported by research at the Tyndall National Institute in Cork.
SFI is providing €11.8m, with industry and social partners chipping in €4.6m in cash, facilities, services and personnel. IBM, Vodafone, Ericsson and Fidelity Investments are among the firms involved.
UCD Professor Barry Smyth will be director, with DCU's Professor Alan Smeaton as deputy director.
The research will focus on the 'sensor web', combining the use of smart sensing devices with new technologies for refining and gathering information.
These will include ways to monitor the impact of exercise on health, and technology which can monitor the quality of the environment.
