€90m for energy technology research

The Government is to provide €90m over the next five years for research in the area of sustainable energy and energy technologies. The money will be allocated through Science Foundation Ireland (SFI).

This follows agreement between the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin and the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan on how the funds should be targeted.

Speaking at the Energy Forum 2008, Minister Martin said SFI had an excellent track record in
developing research clusters and centres in other areas, and these opportunities would now be extended to the energy technology sector.
