A total of 261 audiovisual productions were completed in Ireland last year at a cost of €279.9m.

The figures, contained in IBEC's Audiovisual Federation 2007 Review, show a huge increase of the 2006 production value of €153m.

However, estimates predict that the worth of the sector will fall to €226m this year. There was a recovery in film, up to €29.8m from €17.5m in 2005, but television showed the biggest improvement.

Shows such as The Tudors and Rough Diamond and Ros na Rún helped bring the spend to €113.8m in 2006, with that expected to rise to €154m this year.

Kevin Moriarty, MD of Ardmore Studios and Chairman of the Audiovisual Federation Database Committee that produced the report, said: 'Overall the film and television industry in Ireland continues to be a significant employer with great potential economically and culturally.

'However, if Ireland is to continue to participate in the huge growth internationally of the industry, it is essential that steps are taken now to restore competitiveness, particularly in the film sector,' he added.
