IBEC has said the slowdown in the economy represents an opportunity to accelerate the National Development Plan.

In its submission on the next Budget, the employers' group says to have speeded up the NDP during the housing boom could have driven up costs.

According to IBEC, the Government should commit funds to bring forward the completion dates of roads and other projects covered by the NDP.

IBEC Director General Turlough O'Sullivan believes that this should include 'around the clock' work on major roadways.

Mr O'Sullivan also said that 'a programme of schools' construction and upgrading should begin immediately.'

The group has urged that no measures should be taken that would contribute to inflation.
