New Cavan jobs, Longford firm cuts back

There was mixed job news today with a Cavan firm annoucing it plans to create 100 new jobs and the news that 45 jobs are to go at an electronics plant in County Longford.

Kimball Electronics is an international group which purchased the Magna Donnelly Plant in Longford Town twelve months ago, and today it announced that 45 members of its 156 workforce are to be let go.

Staff had been on notice for several months that there could be job losses after the firm lost a key contract.

A further 20 people employed on temporary contracts will also be let go in the coming months.

Kimball Electronics manufactures electronic assemblies and circuit boards on a contract basis.

Meanwhile, it was announced today that Cavan-based telecommunications services group Obelisk is to recruit 100 new staff over the next year.

The company already employs 50 people.

Obelisk says the new positions include project managers, engineers, town planners, technical designers, radio planners and facility managers as well as back office staff.

Obelisk provides services to most of the major wireless and fixed-line telecommunications operators in Ireland.
It also does business in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and South Africa.
