The board of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) has appointed Dr Frank Gannon as the organisation's new director general. He will formally take up the position in May 2007.
Dr Gannon is already a board member of SFI.
Since 1994, Dr Gannon has led the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) as executive director, based in Heidelberg, Germany.
He has also served as secretary general of the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC), EMBO's inter-governmental funding body, and as senior scientist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).
SFI distributes grants for research projects on behalf of the Government.
