Investigations are continuing into the circumstances of an incident which saw a car enter a canal in Co Cavan last night, claiming the life of a man in his 20s.

The man, from Naas in Co Kildare, was travelling in a car with two other men when it plunged into the water about 3km from Ballyheady bridge on the Ballinamore to Ballyconnell road at 6.30pm.

The two other men managed to escape the car.

The man's body was later recovered from the water.

The incident happened at a remote location at the end of an unmapped road, which led directly to an unfenced section of the Shannon-Erne waterway.

It is understood that the three men were visiting a family who lived near where the accident took place.
