Sinn Féin has written to the Oireachtas health committee calling for an unscheduled meeting to discuss inviting Department of Health Secretary General Robert Watt before the committee.

The party's health spokesman David Cullinane made the request following the disclosure that the now abandoned secondment of Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan to Trinity College would have involved a project costing €2m per annum.

Mr Cullinane said the proposed expenditure had not been passed by the Minister for Health or the Government and this raised "serious governance issues".

He added that Mr Watt did not provide information, which was now in the public domain, regarding costs at his previous appearance at the committee.

Mr Cullinane said Health Research Ireland should also be invited before the committee.

The organisation has already said it was not involved in discussions regarding the proposed project involving Dr Holohan.
