The writs for four Dáil by-elections on 29 November have been formally moved in the chamber.

The elections are the result of four TDs departing Leinster House last May to take up their seats in the European Parliament.

They will take place in the constituencies of: Cork North Central, Dublin Mid-West, Wexford and Dublin Fingal.

Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy said the campaigns ahead would be respectful.

Fine Gael has said that it was aiming to win one of the four seats up for grabs.

Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty said he welcomed the timely manner in which these electoral contests were taking place.

He said this contrasted with what happened a decade ago when he had to take court action to force the holding of a by-election in Donegal.
