The People Before Profit TD, Brid Smith has opened up about the intense time demands placed on Irish Parliamentarians.

In an interview for the RTÉ podcast "Humans of Politics", the Dublin South Central TD told host Abie Philbin Bowman "I hardly get a minute any day, and get very few weekends to myself. I know we get these big holiday breaks from Dail Eireann, but you're using them to catch up on your constituency work".

The TD acknowledged that this reality differs sharply from the public perception. "I think [the public] probably think we have an easy life... but I can guarantee you, I’ve never worked as hard in my life".

Deputy Smith begins the interview by talking about her late mother: "I lost her about a year ago: and sometimes I wonder: have I had time to grieve her?"

The conversation also touches on why anyone would want to be a politician. "Even for the people who are in it for the wrong reasons, I don’t think it’s all about the money... some of it is notoriety... some of it is ego, and some of it is wanting to be popular."
