Man released without charge in Cork murder investigation

A 55-year old man arrested for questioning about the death of a 38-year old community employment scheme worker in Cork yesterday morning has been released without charge.

Gardaí said a file on their investigation will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mark O'Connell was originally from Farranree in Cork city.

He died yesterday morning at Cork University Hospital.

At around 4.30am, gardaí and emergency services were called to a house in the Hollyville estate in Hollyhill in Cork.

They found Mr O'Connell seriously injured there, but still conscious. He had been stabbed.

He was rushed to hospital, where his condition deteriorated and he was later pronounced dead.

The 55-year-old man was arrested at the scene. He was questioned by detectives yesterday and again today, before he was released without charge.

It is understood the two men were known to each other.
