The Health Service Executive in the Cork-Kerry area has said it is concerned that it has failed to meet regulatory standards in two of its residential psychiatric care centres.

In a statement, the HSE acknowledges and accepts the findings by the Inspector of Mental Health Services concerning Mercy University Hospital's St Michael's Unit in Cork city and the Carraig Mór intensive care unit in Shanakiel, Co Cork.

It says its staff work very hard to provide a high level of care and to meet regulatory standards, and that it is a matter of concern for us when those standards are not met.

The statement adds that the issues identified by the reports, which were published yesterday, are being addressed locally, and that the HSE has agreed Corrective and Preventative Plans with the Commission.

It notes that progress in relation to these plans will be reviewed with the Commission in three months' time.
