The teenage girl who died after getting into difficulty while swimming at Seapoint beach in Co Louth yesterday has been named locally as Jill Amante.
The 14-year-old from Drogheda was a second-year student at Ballymakenny College in the town.
In a statement, the school's principal Alan Mynes said what happened was a "terrible tragedy" for the family, the school and the community.
"We are deeply saddened by this devastating news. Jill was a bright, funny and popular student - she made a tremendous contribution to Ballymakenny College life in her short time", he said.
Mr Mynes added that Jill Amante was "always a polite and outgoing student and will be missed by all staff and students".
He extended sympathy and support to her family and appealed for privacy.
Labour Senator from Co Louth, Ged Nash, said the young girl who lost her life was a very popular and bright teenager, who had a bright future ahead of her.
Local councillor Tom Cunningham described the tragedy as "terrible news".
He said the teenager was "just out enjoying the good weather and spending time with her friends, I can't imagine what her family is going through".
