"When we got to the hospital, I found my son's dead body. That was around 5pm yesterday morning in St James's Hospital in Dublin.
"He was a very quiet guy, he goes his own way, he doesn't cause trouble. He's a very funny guy, he's always friendly," she said.
Ms Balogun described him as "easy-going" and said he was best friends with his father.
She said her son was born in Ireland and the family have been living in Dundalk for more than two decades.
He was 'gentle and calm', says stepmother
Loveth Patrick, who describes herself as Mr Balogun's stepmother, said he was "the sweetest soul you could ever meet".
She said he was "gentle and calm" and spent a lot of time at home in his room. She said she would frequently hear him laughing.
Ms Patrick said they do not know why this assault happened.
"That is the question we want and we want justice for Qayyum."
Ms Patrick said there is false information online that Mr Balogun was "in a gang".
She said he worked in a nearby Burger King restaurant and was studying Computer Science at Maynooth University.
"This is unbelievable. We need justice for Qayyum. That is all we need," she said.
A guy with 'ambition, a goal', says former principal
Mr Balogun was educated at Ó Fiaich College in Dundalk and then Ó'Fiaich Institute of Further Education where he undertook studies in business and computing.
Principal of Ó Fiaich College Padraig McGovern described Mr Balogun as "a lovely young lad, very much part of our school community".
"He did very well in his programmes here, both his Leaving Cert and his further education programme.
"A guy with ambition, a guy with a goal and a chap that was making this goal real and being successful," Mr McGovern said.
"A credit to his family, a credit to his community and getting on with it."
Mr McGovern said the news of Mr Balogun's death had come as a terrible shock.
"Our school here that's preparing for exams, just everybody here is really shocked, and the wider community, people are ringing me as well in shock and almost disbelief.
"And I cannot imagine what has come on his family," he added.
