Mourners at St Munchin's Church were told Scarlett Faulkner's life was 'intertwined with love, responsibility and hope'

Scarlett Faulkner was remembered at her funeral mass today as "a young mother, a daughter, a lady whose life was intertwined with love, responsibility and hope".

Ms Faulkner died after sustaining serious head injuries in an assault last month.

A horse-drawn carriage, carrying the casket of the 29-year-old, led the funeral cortege to St Munchin's Church, opposite the Treaty Stone.

The aisle of the church was lined with cherry blossom trees and some mourners dressed in pink in honour of the Limerick woman.

Canon Dónal McNamara celebrated the funeral mass of Ms Faulkner, who was remembered as "a young mother, a daughter, a lady whose life was intertwined with love, responsibility and hope".

He said her greatest gift is her daughter Oceanna.

"The love she gave, the care she showed, the moments she lived as a mother, these are not wiped out. They remain now held safely in God," Canon McNamara said.

He said those gathered to mourn the tragic death of Ms Faulkner "face something very difficult but nevertheless essential and that is the call to forgiveness".

He said that does not mean ignoring what has happened and it does not mean denying pain or excusing wrongdoing.

"Forgiveness is a journey, often long and difficult, but nevertheless it is a path that leads away from being consumed by anger and towards the freedom that God desires for each of us," he said.

During the eulogy, Scarlett's sister, Victoria Faulkner, thanked people for the love and support shown to Scarlett.

She said: "I'll cherish every memory we ever shared together. You were a character. You always made us laugh no matter what mood we might have been in.

"You made our bad days better. We will miss your beautiful smile and loving personality.

"You had a heart like no other. The love you showed us, we will never forget."

"Scarlett, you have left a big hole in each and every one of our hearts," she said.

"We promise you, sister, we will get the justice you deserve," she added.

She said her family hope to get justice following Scarlett's death.

Ms Faulkner was laid to rest in Ballycannon cemetery in Meelick.
