Arrest after man in his 70s dies following assault

A man has been arrested after a man in his 70s died following an assault in Co Waterford, yesterday.

Gardaí responded to an incident at a house on a large farm in the townland of Cappagh, about 10km east of Dungarvan shortly after 6pm.

The farm is understood to be around 150 acres in size.

The man in his 70s was found with serious injuries and later pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been removed to University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and is being held at a garda station in Waterford.

It is understood that he and the victim were known to each other.

The farm is believed to be around 150 acres in size.

The scene has been preserved for a forensic examination and the Office of the State Pathologist has been notified.

Gardaí say their investigations are ongoing.
