An investigation is under way into an arson attack on a garda station in Co Wexford in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí said the incident of criminal damage by fire occurred at Blackwater Garda Station, which is located about 20km east of Enniscorthy, at around 2.50am.

Extensive damage has been caused to the building.

Wexford county councillor Oliver Walsh (Fine Gael) said he was "surprised, and very sad to see something like this happening" but added that he was relieved no gardaí were in the building at the time.

He said the garda station was "an integral part of the village", and that he had been assured that a temporary office would be set up.
