The Government is considering increasing its financial support for Ukraine to help it defend itself from Russia.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin has updated the Cabinet on plans for Ireland to step up its contribution from €271.8m to €454.4m.

The money would be spent between 2024 and 2027 and would be made through the European Peace Facility.

Under the proposals, the EU's Ukraine Assistance Fund would be a total of €20bn.

A spokesman for the Tánaiste said that "In line with the Programme for Government, Ireland has constructively abstained on all lethal equipment elements of the previous EPF support packages for Ukraine".
