Unions at RTÉ today raised questions with management at the broadcaster after the former chief financial officer Breda O'Keeffe told an Oireachtas Committee this week she had received a voluntary exit package from her employer.

Irish Secretary of the National Union of Journalists Seamus Dooley said workers at RTÉ were "demanding clarification" regarding Ms O'Keeffe's exit package as a new chief financial officer had been appointed and there had been "no change to the executive board".

He said there seemed to be an inconsistency to the situation for ordinary staff, some of whom were turned down for packages.

Ms O'Keeffe left RTÉ in March 2020 after 17 years with the organisation and was replaced by the current Chief Financial Officer Richard Collins.

At the Oireachtas Media Committee on Wednesday, Ms O'Keeffe said left RTÉ under "a voluntary restructuring programme" that she had applied for.

This evening, a spokesperson for the broadcaster said it was "not in a position to provide contractual details" regarding voluntary exit agreements.

It is understood packages that involve a payment to the departing member of staff are normally granted in circumstances where their role is suppressed or there has been a reorganisation within the company to reflect a role being made redundant.

Ms O'Keeffe has not responded to a request for comment.
