Members of the Writers Guild of Ireland are joining television and film writers in the US and around the world for a '"global day of solidarity and action".

Since 2 May, 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America have been on strike over issues, including pay and conditions.

Writers in over 20 countries will take part in today's event to show their support.

In Ireland, the action is being supported by the Irish Writers Union, Screen Directors Guild, Irish Equity and Screen Composers of Ireland.

Writers Guild of Ireland chair Jennifer Davidson said that what has been particularly notable about the strike is the support from screenwriters around the world.

She said the struggle for fair compensation and protection against global streaming companies affects all writers.

MS Davidson added that Irish writers are already seeing clauses in their contracts asking them to waive legal rights to fair and proportionate remuneration, rights they fought for under the European Copyright Directive.

The action will take place in Ireland at 11.30am at St Stephen's Green in Dublin.
