Death announced of former RTÉ DG George Waters

The death has taken place of Dr George Waters, former director general of RTÉ and former technical director of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Initially director of engineering, Dr Waters was appointed as RTÉ director general in 1978 and held that post until 1985.

During that time, he oversaw the launch of both RTÉ 2 and RTÉ Radio 2. He also led the broadcaster's coverage of the visit of Pope John Paul II to Ireland in 1979.

After leaving RTÉ, he became technical director of the EBU, responsible for the Eurovision Network and the development of television technology throughout Europe.

In 1990, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Trinity College Dublin, for his doctoral thesis on High Definition Television.

He received a technical Emmy award in 1995.

Dr Waters is survived by his wife Mary, his sons Mark and Charles and his grandchildren.
