Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has spoken about an incident earlier today when he had liquid thrown over him while he was filming a video in Merrion Square, Dublin.

Earlier, gardaí said they were investigating the incident.

Footage shared on social media shows a woman wearing a face covering walking up to where Mr Varadkar is standing in the park.

She is seen speaking to one of the camera people, before walking over to the Tánaiste and throwing liquid from a polystyrene cup into his face.

The woman then drops the cup and runs away.

"I thought it was Avril Lavigne at first when I saw this girl approaching with a skateboard and a smoothie," Mr Varadkar said when asked about the incident at a press briefing this evening.

"I was in Merrion Square filming a video to explain the new restrictions to the people of Dublin - and the good news is that we got it finished before the incident."

The Tánaiste said he had not spoken to gardaí yet but added: "I believe they want to speak to me."

Mr Varadkar said he had a garda driver but no other security detail. "I don't think one incident should change that," he said.

Gardaí at Pearse Street confirmed they are investigating the incident.

They are examining the footage and seeking to identify the woman involved.
